The Kirby Carbon Brushes with Holders 2x are a complete set for replacing both carbon brushes in the motor of your Kirby vacuum cleaner. The set consists of two carbon brushes with matching holders made from hard plastic/composite material, allowing you to replace not only the worn brushes but also the holders.

Kirby carbon brush including holders 2x for the motor

Carbon brushes are small blocks made from a carefully formulated carbon and graphite material. During operation, they press against the rotating commutator of the armature, transferring electrical current to the rotating part of the motor.

Because Kirby motors operate at high speeds, the correct hardness, dimensions and material composition are particularly important. In addition, the electrical properties of the carbon brushes must match the load and current requirements of the Kirby motor.

Complete set with durable carbon brush holders

This version comes complete with two matching carbon brush holders. The holders are made from hard plastic/composite material and keep the carbon brushes correctly positioned inside the motor. They also support the spring mechanism that maintains the correct pressure between each carbon brush and the commutator.

Because both the carbon brushes and their holders are replaced, this complete set is particularly useful when the existing holders have been damaged by age, heat or disassembly. Furthermore, there is no need to reuse the old holders during installation.

Wear of Kirby carbon brush including holders

Carbon brushes are normal wear parts because they remain in constant contact with the rotating commutator. This friction gradually wears down the graphite blocks. When a carbon brush has less than approximately one-third of its original length remaining, replacement is recommended.

Worn carbon brushes can cause symptoms such as intermittent motor operation, loss of power, excessive heat or heavy sparking. Since both brushes work together, they should always be replaced as a pair.

Do not use imitation carbon brushes

Do not install just any universal or imitation carbon brushes in a Kirby motor. A brush that is too hard can cause excessive wear to the copper commutator segments. On the other hand, a brush that is too soft can wear down too quickly, causing excessive sparking and eventually damaging the commutator.

Carbon brushes are not universally interchangeable. Their dimensions, shape, hardness, graphite composition, connection and electrical characteristics can vary considerably between electric motors.

Replacing Kirby Carbon Brushes with Holders 2x

When replacing the carbon brushes, always inspect the armature commutator. If the copper segments are burnt, rough or uneven, they should be properly treated before installing the new carbon brushes.

A damaged commutator surface can cause new carbon brushes to wear out very quickly. Where appropriate, the commutator can be smoothed with a special Kirby commutator stone, allowing the new brushes to bed in evenly against the surface.
