What is a Kirby Armature?
The Kirby armature, also known as the rotor, is an essential component of the electric motor. It converts electrical energy into mechanical movement, allowing the motor to rotate and drive the vacuum cleaner.
When an armature becomes worn or damaged, the motor may no longer operate correctly. This can result in reduced performance, unstable motor operation or complete motor failure. In addition, a properly functioning armature contributes to smooth and reliable motor performance.

Installation and maintenance
Installing a motor armature requires accuracy and sufficient technical knowledge due to the electrical and mechanical construction of the electric motor. Correct installation is therefore important for safe and reliable operation.
For maintenance, the following points are also important:
- Ball bearings: Check the bearings for wear and replace them if necessary.
- Carbon brushes: Replace worn carbon brushes in good time to help prevent damage to the armature.
- Commutator: Check the commutator for excessive sparking. Grinding or polishing may, when technically necessary, help restore correct operation.

The commutator and rotor in an electric motor should not produce excessive sparking. Instead, operation should appear calm and even, with only tiny, barely visible sparks or no sparking at all. This indicates good commutation and proper electrical contact between the carbon brushes and the commutator.

When an electric motor is operating correctly, the contact surfaces should have the following characteristics:
- Light, even discolouration: The commutator (the copper segments) should have a smooth, shiny, light-brown to dark-brown oxide layer, also known as the patina.
- Smooth operation: The carbon brushes should glide over the commutator segments without bouncing or excessive vibration.
- Minimal wear: There should be no signs of burning, deep grooves or unusually rapid wear of the carbon brushes.
Excessive sparking, sometimes referred to as “ring fire” in extreme cases, is often a sign of worn carbon brushes, a defective winding, a contaminated commutator or excessive mechanical load.
